There has been a significant increase in the awareness of sustainability and the environmental impact on our planet in recent years. The average consumer is also looking for products that are more eco-friendly while moving away from plastic usage. With this trend, garments and materials made from recycled plastics have a growing demand from eco-conscious shoppers.
So, how are fabrics made from recycled plastics, and is it safe to wear them?

Turning Plastics into Fabrics

Now, before you begin to imagine wearing a plastic bag on your body, eco-fabrics that are made from recycled plastics actually look and feel just like… fabric. Let’s look at how the average PET plastic bottle gets turned into the fabric:

  • Plastic bottles are collected in your local recycling centre
  • They are then sorted and cleaned in facilities, to remove unsuitable objects that can’t be processed, such as bottle caps
  • Bottles are then processed in a machine and melted into a liquid form
  • The melted plastic then goes through another machine and is made into a long filament
  • The long filament is cut into tiny pallets
  • These pellets and flakes are sent to the spinning mill to produce fibre and yarn
  • The fibre and yarn are then woven and knitted into a polyester fabric that can be used for clothing

The resulting garment is no different in terms of quality and comfort than one that is made from regular fabric. It is safe to wear as the recycling process ensures hygiene, and the garment is essentially a new product.

Saving Our Oceans from Plastic Wastes

With over 1 million* marine animals being killed by plastic pollution alone each year, choosing clothing made from recycled plastic bottles is one of the key steps in saving our oceans. Did you know, you can also wear School Uniforms that are made from eco-fabrics?

The school uniform is one of the most worn garments by many students nationwide, on most days of the week, so why not make a statement at your school by offering a sustainable uniform range?
